Oh look, Spaghetti Bolognaise, a staple weekly dish for many. Wait, but you're vegetarians, how can this be?.
After my experiment at Christmas making vege Swedish "meat"balls, I made this recently with Quorn mince. We laughed and laughed with every bite, it was so preposterous. Looks and tastes so much like meat it's quite unnerving (or maybe it doesn't, it has been 18 years since I've eaten it).
As funny as it was though, I don't think I'll be doing it again. For me, vegetarian food isn't something inferior that secretly aspires to be animal meat and it felt weirdly wrong to be eating it.
But did it taste good? I totally agree about vegetarian food not being inferior. Athough as you know I am not vegetarian it doesn't stop me from eating vegetarian meals regularly. Bean Bolognaise is a family favourite just because we like it meatless as well as made with mince. Gone are the days of vegetarian food being meat and three veg minus the meat! Actually I think food in general is alot more interesting than it was even 15 years ago meat or not.
ReplyDeleteP.S that serviette is very pretty and just the thing for spag bol! ;)
Oh yes, I should have mentioned.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful hand-crocheted serviette from my beautiful friend Dette who stayed up all night to make me an enormous set of them!
kiss kiss
p.s. it was OK but not so good we'll be doing it again!
You didn't need to mention I just noticed it and was glad to see it used plus I was being cheeky!
ReplyDeleteYou know, when I was China, Chris and I visited all these incredible vegetarian restaurants, run by Buddhist monks, that were famed for their ability to create these intricate "I can't believe it's not meat" dishes. You know, chicken - made from tofu, with some sort of crunchy thing for "bones" - and stuff like that. As interesting as it all is, I couldn't do it. If I wanted to eat something like chicken, I would eat a chicken! Totally agree with you. You can do so much with vegies - why make them taste like meat?!
